We got about 10 inches of wind-driven snow Wednesday (Dec. 19, 2012) afternoon and overnight. You already know this because you got in on the fun, too.
I?ll bet you didn?t learn as big a lesson as I did, though. Let?s find out, shall we?
Those of you playing along at home probably know Good Wife Norma and I strrreched our single car attached garage into a three-holer. Actually, in the interest of full disclosure I must acknowledge that Son Aaron, Cousin Larry and a small army of their buddies did the actual stretching. The only thing GWN and I are required to stretch is our budget.
So into the garage our vehicles went, safely tucked away as this week?s blizzard raged over and through us. By the way, this is the first place we?ve lived since our wedding day on June 27, 1970 that has enough garage for all three of our vehicles.
As the snow came down harder and the wind kicked up to full fury, GWN, two tube dogs, two cars and a pickup were all inside, laughing it off.
Not to say I was arrogant, but I distinctly remember smiling all smug like and thinking, ?Ha-ha, Mother Nature, you can?t hurt me now. I sniff in disdain at your blizzard. I huff in your general direction.?
Not an attitude of which my mother would be proud perhaps, but doggone it I earned it by scraping windows every winter since I was 16.
But I was quick to learn no good fortune shall go unpunished. That lesson was delivered Thursday morning as I stood inside all that garage, put the smaller door up and, for the first time, fully comprehended the snow removal challenges inherent in a couple acres of new driveway.
As it turns out, three times as much driveway equals three times as much snow and a third as much space to put it. Deep snow in this case, including a great long drift running all the way across in front of those south-facing garage doors.
It was immediately clear Mom Nature was about to have the last laugh.
Two possible scenarios became immediately obvious: (1) the snow blower starts, doesn?t conk out and I eventually dig us out, or (2) it doesn?t and our entire aged fleet is trapped until spring.
Thankfully the thing started. It didn?t break down, neither did I and we were, eventually, free of our own home improvement project.
Do I love the big garage? Oh my, yes, especially since the two extra vehicles in there are both mine (GWN has always held garage seniority at our house).
Is my obnoxious attitude corrected? Again I say, Oh my, yes.
Finally, have a great holiday with your family. Don?t forget to spread the love on thick because none of us is promised even one more day, let alone another Christmas a whole year from now. Today?s topic is life lessons and we learned another one, that life is fleeting, in the most horrific way imaginable.
Merry Christmas and Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men ? and women and most of all, our precious, fragile children.
