Greenland, Antarctic Ice Is Melting Faster

An iceberg that likely calved from Jakobshavn Isbrae, the fastest glacier in western Greenland.

Superstorm Sandy sparked a lot of interest in rising sea levels when it swept across the Northeast last month and flooded parts of the coast. Over the next century, more water ? and higher sea levels ? could come from melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica. How much has been unclear.

But now scientists have developed a much clearer view of how quickly that ice has been melting over the past two decades. And that will help researchers forecast the rate of sea-level rise in the years to come.

There's enough ice sitting on Greenland and Antarctica to drive up sea level catastrophically ? by more than 200 feet. Thankfully, nobody expects it all to melt.

But over the past two decades, scientists have been struggling to understand just what has been happening on those ice sheets, using primarily satellite-based instruments.

"There are three different techniques," says Andy Shepherd at the University of Leeds in the U.K. "The oldest is called altimetry. It's the same sort of instrument an airplane carries to tell how high it is above the ground."

Satellites also measure the flow of giant glaciers as they stream toward the sea. And a third technique measures tiny changes in gravity, which is a way to measure the mass of ice in those sheets.

But these three different techniques didn't provide one clear answer. So Shepherd brought together all the world's experts on this topic to resolve many of the discrepancies.

It's a tricky business. Ice isn't simply behaving as a monolith. For example, ice in some parts of Antarctica is growing, because warmer air holds more moisture and leads to more snowfall. But other parts are melting as warm seawater eats away at the edges.

"It wasn't clear because of the uncertainty of the data whether the ice sheet was growing or shrinking," Shepherd says. "And now we're able to say with confidence, over all that time period, that it was shrinking."

Greenland's ice has also been shrinking.

And when the researchers put all their data together, they found that Antarctica and Greenland together have melted enough over the past 20 years to raise sea level a very modest amount: about half an inch. They published their results in Science magazine.

For several summers this deeply incised melt channel transported overflow from a large melt lake to a moulin, a conduit that drains the water through many hundreds of feet to the ice sheet's bed.

If you want to let out a sigh of relief, Shepherd says go ahead.

"My job is to tell people good and bad news. And if the ice sheets have not made a huge contribution to sea level, then I think people ought to be happy about that."

But don't relax too much. Ian Joughin, a co-author of the study at the University of Washington, says the melting of these giant ice sheets has accelerated rapidly in recent years as the Earth has warmed, "and that's a big cause for concern. What we really don't know is how much [melt rates] are going to continue to go up."

Scientists are now feeling more confident about being able to measure change as it happens. But figuring out what the ice is going to do is difficult.

The biggest wild card is what will happen to some huge glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica that, in just a few years, have picked up a lot of speed as they flowed into the sea.

"Unfortunately, there's a lot we still don't understand about the various processes that are controlling the fast ice flow, and how fast icebergs are discharged to the ocean," Joughin says.

These surges appear to be driven by ever-warming seawater, which is flowing under the edge of the ice sheets, eating away at them from below.

"In Antarctica, this is really most of the melting that goes on," Joughin says. "And as climate warms and more warm water comes in contact with these ice shelves, it tends to thin them and potentially break them up."

The big question is how quickly this will happen in the coming decades.

Scientists at one point thought the ice could melt catastrophically, adding more than 10 feet to sea level in the course of a century or so. Now, the experts in this field are thinking that sea level is much more likely to rise 2 or 3 feet by the end of the century.

That includes additional sea-level rise from melting mountain glaciers and from the ocean itself, which expands as the water heats up.

And 3 feet (about 1 meter) is a lot.

"What today is a once-in-a-century storm surge event in New York City would happen every three years if you had a 1-meter rise in sea level," says Stefan Rahmstorf at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research near Berlin. "So a 1-meter sea level rise is huge."

And it's by no means the end of the story. As long as the Earth keeps warming, the seas will keep on rising.

Senate backs quicker withdrawal from Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.

The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 68,000 U.S. troops, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.

Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.

Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.

"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.

The overall bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops through the end of 2014.

The Senate eliminated one provision that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, the Senate voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

If I don't update my iOS will my iPhone 5 stay fast

Quote:

If I don't download too many apps and stay on iOS 6 will my iPhone 5 stay as fast?

Not necessarily. The number of apps you have downloaded does not have an effect on the speed of your phone.

Whether the next iOS version will have an effect will be seen when it is released, at which point it is possible that it runs a little slower, but it's equally possible that it runs the same, or faster. Just depends on how it's coded.

Police said 11 passengers suffered minor injuries. About 20 people were on the bus.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His brother suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The pedestrian who was struck was taken to the hospital. Police described his injuries as non-life threatening.

The identities of the children were not immediately released.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated no apparent criminality. The investigation was continuing.

A spokesperson for NICE said the company "is cooperating with police officials, and has its own team investigating the incident."

Earlier Tuesday evening, a 35-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a transit bus in Coram. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m. There were no other injuries.

Lanyrd Jumps Into The Space Left By LinkedIn?s Events App Closure With New Features

1-dashboard-croppedAs of today, LinkedIn is shutting down its LinkedIn Events application. As you can see, the events industry is gnashing its teeth over this move. The events side of the app has been long used as a marketing element for many B2B event organisers and even as a revenue generator because of its power to highlight upcoming events. However, YC-graduate startup Lanyrd hopes to fill the gap today by integrating with LinkedIn and loosening its previously strong ties with Twitter buy allowing a registration outside of the social network.

NZ Olympic success spurs interest in grass roots sport | Kerikeri Rugby

Olympic success spurs interest in grass roots sport

New Zealand?s success at the London Olympic and Paralympic Games looks to be driving a surge of interest in those sports codes here at home.

Sport NZ Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin says many sports are anecdotally reporting an increase in numbers or membership enquiries in the aftermath of the London Games, including athletics, rowing, cycling, canoe and yachting.

?We saw a surge in football interest after the 2010 World Cup and the same thing happened with Rugby in 2011. Now it?s London?s turn," he said.

?We know that seeing our sporting heroes succeed on the world stage can motivate people, young and older, to give those sports a go, and that?s what we?re seeing now.

Rowing is a good example. We?re hearing that clubs across New Zealand are putting out more novice crews than last year. For example, the Taupo Rowing Club, which had been going through lean times, now has lots of new rowers on the water. That?s great news.?

Miskimmin says the same thing is happening in athletics, with one Wellington club reporting membership figures in some categories that are 50% higher than at the same time last year.

?It seems too that Lisa Carrington?s gold medal has inspired lots of young people to try canoe racing, just as Ian Fergusson and Paul MacDonald did in their time.?

?Likewise Yachting New Zealand tells us that the presence of Olympians like Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie at regattas and open days around the country has drawn big crowds, with many wanting to try sailing for the first time. And the same sort of thing happened when Sarah Walker and Alison Shanks turned up at a Dunedin BMX Club event recently. That club now has almost double the members it had last year.?

Miskimmin says it?s a real credit to our Olympians that they?re prepared to share their success and be such great role models.

?This surge of interest in grass roots sport shows the real value of winning Olympic medals, and is why the Government invests in high performance sport. Winning Olympic medals gives us a real sense of national pride at the time. But it also motivates people to get out and try sports themselves, which is a valuable legacy. That means we have more people involved in sport and recreation, and have a bigger pool of future champions.

"That?s why Sport NZ and our sector partners work hard to ensure the pathway is there to take the emerging stars through to being our next winners on the world stage.?

Willpower Your Way To A Successful Career - Outshine Consulting

Post image for Willpower Your Way To A Successful Career

There?s no denying the benefits of willpower, but most of us have struggled at one time or another to maintain it long enough to reach our most important goals, and that?s probably because we?ve tried to use it in the wrong way.? If you want to get ahead in your career, or willpower your way to success, here?s how to leverage one of the most valuable tools available to you?

Here?s How To Use It?

There?s no substitute for willpower, despite what the commercials say!? We all know that ?fast and easy? diet pills aren?t the solution to a healthy lifestyle, but it?s a lack of buyers willpower that helps those products become successful.

The problem with willpower is that it provides a quick boost of motivation, which can burn out quickly, and if you don?t know how to use that burst in the best way possible then your level of self-discipline can fall by the wayside very quickly.

Given that willpower is typically a thrust forward, rather than a steady pace, it?s important not to tackle your goals and challenges in a way that requires a high level of willpower everyday because frankly, it?s unsustainable.? Success breeds success so you need a strategy that you can keep up to maintain momentum.

Willpower is great for setting the scene on how to move forward to achieve your goals, and then using that initial thrust of motivation to get moving.? So for example, if you want to change career, the first thing you need to do is to identify all the steps required to make that transition including what career you want to move in to, and then what skills you need to develop in order to make that move.

You might also feel tempted to stay in the ?same old job? because of your financial situation for example, so it would be wise to put together a budget to get your finances in order.? It might also be important for you to set aside time each weekend to study and up-skill,? and to join relevant associations and groups to expand your network in the industry you?re interested in.? You? could also get a Coach or Mentor so that you can learn more about career change, and you might also meet with several recruiters to get their expert advice on how to break into that particular industry.

As you can see, there are lots of different elements involved in achieving this goal, and all of this information would go into a written plan on how to change career.? Then it?s time for action ? and fast!? With focus, you could put a lot of these tasks into action in one day, and by the end of the day you will have used your willpower not to change jobs, but to put into place the conditions you need to make a career change easier.

The key point here is not to use willpower to make the actual change, but to attack your environment in order to set yourself up for that change.? The same goes for setting up a business, working towards a promotion, losing weight and so on ? if you leverage willpower in this way it will make it much easier for you to achieve your goals as you?ll create momentum and build positive habits to help you achieve success.? And remember, once a habit is formed you don?t need much willpower to keep moving forward, which means you?ll find it easier and easier to achieve the things that are most important to you.? The knock-on effect is huge!

A glass of wine please, say Canadians who are moving to more ...

MONTREAL, Que. ? Canadians are increasingly reaching for a glass of Beaujolais instead of beer and they?re also drinking more domestic wines, says a new study on Canadian drinking habits.

Consumers bought an average of 22 bottles of wine in 2011, up from 13 in 1995, found the Bank of Montreal?s (TSX:BMO) special report on the Canadian wine industry.

?It?s a meteoric rise, really,? said David Rinneard, national manager of agriculture at BMO.

And Canada?s wine industry is poised for solid growth over the next five years, thanks in part to an aging population, a willingness to pay more for premium wines and the opportunity for domestic producers to make bigger inroads in the Canadian marketplace, the report said.

A third of wine consumed in Canada is produced by domestic wineries, Rinneard said. More than half of wine consumed in New Brunswick is Canadian-made and almost half of wine consumed in British Columbia is Canadian, he added.

?Canadian wineries continue to evolve, continue to hone their craft to the point where they are making some really globally competitive wines, which will in time bode well for all Canadian vintners,? Rinneard said from Toronto.

But Quebec, which is the leading wine drinking province, has the lowest consumption of Canadian-made wine at a little more than 20 per cent.

Wine has drained away market share from beer and spirits to the point where it?s a third of all alcohol consumption in Canada, the recent report said.

Over the 1995 to 2011 period, wine rose from 18 per cent to 30 per cent of Canadians? total alcohol consumption, while beer fell from 53 per cent to 45 per cent and spirits fell from 29 per cent to 25 per cent.

One hindrance for Canadian wine makers is the climate does impose limits on Canada?s wine production, which is concentrated in southern Ontario and Prince Edward County in southeastern Ontario as well as the interior of British Columbia, he said. There is also some wine production in Nova Scotia and Quebec.

Rinneard said Canadian wineries do import grapes and blend them into some of their wines to increase production, due to the climate.

But the freezing temperatures are also essential to the production of Canada?s ice wine, known globally.

?It?s certainly a niche, if you will, that Canadian wineries have carved out on a global level and certainly have positioned Canadian wineries as the pre-eminent ice wine producer on the planet.?

Rinneard said he sees Canada?s wine industry, which employs about 5,000 people, poised for solid growth over the next five years.

?Certainly growth in many respects is attributable to changing consumer palates,? he said.

Rinneard said he sees growth for Canadian wines in southeast Asia, particularly China where ice wine is already seen as something of a luxury good.

He isn?t as optimistic about Latin America, where Canadian wines would have to compete with ?plenty of cheap wines.?

Wine writer Michael Pinkus said B.C.?s wine industry is seen very much in a good light worldwide, but Ontario?s wine industry ?barely makes a drop in the large glass of wine,? on a global level, except for ice wine.

People are starting to know Ontario for cool climate Chardonnay wine, but the province has a reputation to deal with, Pinkus said.

?B.C. doesn?t have the nasty past that Ontario has,? said Pinkus, president of the Wine Writers? Circle of Canada.

?Ontario had Baby Duck and things like that kind of tarred Ontario with a broad brush of making, for lack of a better term, crappy wine. That?s the stuff your parents grew up on.?

However, younger people are really taking to Ontario wines, he said. It?s the older generation that?s still looking to French and Italian wines, said Pinkus, who lives in the heart of Ontario?s Niagara wine region in St. Catharines, Ont.

Overall, Pinkus said there?s potential for the Canadian wine industry and noted the climate doesn?t prevent Ontario from making good wine, Pinkus said.

?A cool climate gives you better acidity, gives you wines that are better for food because it cleanses the palate,? he said.

?Instead of sitting on the palate, it freshens the mouth, freshens the palate and you?re ready for your next bite.?

Another issue is that most provinces ban the direct importation of wine from other provinces.

But last week Nova Scotia introduced provincial legislation that would allow the province?s wine drinkers to import wine from other parts of Canada, following a recent decision by the federal government to lift its prohibition on wine importation.

If the legislation becomes law, Nova Scotia would join British Columbia and Manitoba as the only provinces to allow direct importation.

ECB official presses for Greek aid deal

(AP) ? A top European Central Bank official says he hopes eurozone countries will clear the way Monday for Greece to receive its next aid installment, stressing that a deal will require movement from all involved.

Eurozone finance ministers are trying to reach a deal after failing last week. Athens needs the next batch of rescue loans to avoid bankruptcy, but creditors have differed over how to finance giving it more time to get its house in order.

ECB executive board member Joerg Asmussen was quoted Sunday as telling German daily Bild that a package of measures to plug that financing gap should include "a significant reduction of interest rates on the aid loans and a debt buyback by Greece." But he said it won't include a debt write-off, or "haircut."

State Parks Boating Program presents safety awards - Port Orchard ...

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Boating Program announces awards honoring law enforcement officers around the state for outstanding performance and service.

The 2012 Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement awards are presented each year among 50 approved law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The programs are comprised of certified police officers who perform a full range of law enforcement duties, including patrolling all waterways to enforce state laws and boating safety regulations.

The Washington State Parks Recreational Boating Program is administered by Washington State Parks to promote enjoyable, safe, environmentally responsible recreation on Washington?s waters. The program works in partnership with local and state government, businesses, non-profit organizations, citizen action groups and the boating public. State Parks? principle boating safety partners are local government law enforcement officers.

"This is the 13th year the State Parks Boating Program has presented local law enforcement officers with these awards for great accomplishments in recreational boating safety,? said Wade Alonzo, State Parks boating law administrator. ?These awards are to recognize outstanding individuals for their continued efforts to educate and enforce boating laws that are in place to reduce casualties in our state.?

The Recreational Boating Safety Lifesaving Award of the Year: This award recognizes officers whose quick and courageous actions resulted in preventing injury or death in the case of a recreational boater. Ten officers received the 2012 award:

  • Deputy Rich Poppie and Deputy Rich Schlaman of Douglas County Sherriff?s Office were honored for saving a family of three after they were thrown off their personal watercraft on the Columbia River. All three family members were struggling to stay above the water. One of the victims was not wearing a life jacket.
  • Seattle Harbor Patrol Unit?s Squad-D, including Sgt. Mike Pugel, Officer Erik Salisbury, Officer James Johnson, Officer Thomas Monroe, and Officer Mark Mulvanny from the Seattle Harbor Patrol Unit?s Squad-D were given the award for swift action that saved 12 people when two Lake Union Crew boats capsized. A Lake Union Crew coach called the harbor patrol after the crew members fell into the frigid 44-degree waters of Lake Union. None of the victims was wearing a life jacket.
  • Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) officers Dan Klump, Eric Oswald and William Smith received the lifesaving award for the rescue of two young girls during an unusual and unanticipated storm that hit Chelan County in July. The girls were on Lake Chelan when their small craft began to take on water and was on the verge of sinking. The girls were not wearing life jackets.

The Recreational Boating Safety Education Merit Award went to Pend Oreille County Sheriff?s Office for its success in increasing boater education outreach. The unit, made up of 12 certified marine enforcement deputies and a sergeant, works to support the state?s boating safety education efforts. In 2012, they conducted six Adventures in Boating Washington education courses, resulting in 50 boaters receiving the mandatory boater education card. The Pend Oreille officers continue to reach out to boaters at local boat shows, and community and scouting events.

The Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement Program of the Year went to the Spokane County Sheriff?s Office. The department?s marine enforcement unit includes 12 boater education instructors, a sergeant, a corporal and 10 deputies. All are marine certified and work to patrol Spokane County?s waterways during the summer. In 2012, they contacted boaters and wrote a total of 937 inspections and assisted a total of 44 vessel operators. The unit, including its two civilian boater safety education instructors, conducted many public education efforts, including staffing booths at local boat shows and community events. They taught 13 Adventures in Boating Washington courses, resulting in 204 boaters receiving the mandatory boater education card.

The Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement Officer of the Year is Sgt. Phil Johnson from WDFW, awarded for his dedication and tireless efforts in recreational boating safety. Johnson?s efforts helped to establish WDFW?s Recreational Boating Safety program as the premiere curriculum in the state.

Special service commitment awards went to Jim French and Mark Kenny of Olympia, both with the Washington State Parks Boating Program. The program honored the two State Parks employees for their long service and commitment to boating safety. French, who coordinates boating education, has been with State Parks since 1984, after having worked with the Ohio Division of Watercraft. Kenny served as an officer in the Ohio Division of Watercraft before joining State Parks in 1986. He currently coordinates law enforcement and grant funds in the Boating Program.

Wireless networks: Mobile devices keep track

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? A more sensitive technique for determining user position could lead to improved location-based mobile services.

Many mobile-phone applications (apps) use spatial positioning technology to present their user with location-specific information such as directions to nearby amenities. By simultaneously predicting the location of the mobile-user and the data access points, or hotspots, improved accuracy of positioning is now available, thanks to an international research team including Sinno Jialin Pan from the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research1. Software developers expect that such improvements will enable a whole new class of apps that can react to small changes in position.

Traditionally, device position was determined by the Global Positioning System (GPS) that uses satellites to triangulate approximate location, but its accuracy falters when the mobile device is indoors. An alternative approach is to use the 'received signal strength' (RSS) from local transmitters. Attenuation of radio waves by walls can limit accuracy; and, it is difficult to predict signals in complex, obstacle-filled environments.

Software developers have tried to circumvent these problems by using so-called 'learning-based techniques' that identify correlations between RSS values and access-point placement. Such systems do not necessarily require prior knowledge of the hotspot locations; rather they 'learn' from data collected on a mobile device. This also has drawbacks: the amount of data can be large, making calibration time consuming. Changes in the environment can also outdate the calibration.

Pan and his co-workers reduced this calibration effort in an experimental demonstration of a protocol that calculates both the positions of the device and the access points simultaneously -- a process they call colocalization. "Integrating the two location-estimation tasks into a unified mathematical model means that we can fully exploit the correlations between mobile-device and hotspot position," explains Pan.

First, the researchers trained a learning-based system with the signal-strength values received from access points at selected places in the area of interest. They used this information to calibrate a probabilistic 'location-estimation' system. Then, they approximated the location from the learned model using signal strength samples received in real-time from the access points.

Experimental trials showed that this approach not only required less calibration, but it was more accurate than other state-of-the-art systems. "We next want to apply the method to a larger-scale environment," says Pan. "We also want to find ways to make use of the estimated locations to provide more useful information, such as location-based advertising." As this technique could help robots navigate by themselves, it may also have important implications for the burgeoning field of robotics.

(AP) ? Gravy was still warm. Dallas Cowboys were still in uniform. Thanks were still being given across the country as the pilgrimages to the stores began, heralding a new era of American consumerism.

Lured by earlier-than-ever Black Friday sales, people left Grandma and Grandpa in search of Samsung and Toshiba. They did not go blindly: In dozens of interviews, people acknowledged how spending has become inseparable from the holidays. Older folks pined for the days of Erector Sets and Thumbelinas while in line to pay iPad prices. Even some younger shoppers said it felt wrong to be spending money instead of quality time on Thanksgiving.

"But we're still out here," said Kelly Jackson, a paralegal who was standing inside a Best Buy store in the Pittsburgh suburbs, a 32-inch television ($189) in her cart. It was a consolation prize: Despite four hours on line, she missed the cheaper 40-inchers ($179) that she had heard about while listening to Internet radio.

Jackson's resignation was common among those who flocked to capitalism's temples for the consumer equivalent of genuflecting. Many said that this Black Friday bled into Thursday crossed a line, that merchants should not intrude like this. Christmas is about the message of Jesus, the feeling went ? not about the gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Yet amid these protests, people still talked about feeling powerless beneath the moment ? as if they had no choice but to shop.

"You have to have these things to enjoy your children and your family," said Jackson's friend Ebony Jones, who had secured two laptops ($187.99 each) for her 7 and 11 year olds.

Why must we buy? To demonstrate our love for others? To add a few more inches to our televisions? To help America recover from a vicious recession that itself was born of the desire for more?

Such questions make Jones wince. "It shouldn't be that way, but in a sense there's no way around it," said Jones, a nurse. "Everything ends up with a dollar amount. Even your happiness."

Retailers have long capitalized on the holiday season's perfect storm of emotion and tradition. "We all want to be loved, we all like to give love," says Roger Beahme, director of the Center for Retail Innovation at the Wake Forest Schools of Business. Through a flood of advertising on TV, radio and newspapers, he says, retailers can create emotions.

"Will Rogers said it's the art of convincing people to spend money they don't have on something they don't need," Beahme says. Although advertising can serve useful purposes, he says, "there's some truth to that."

Many embrace the feeling ? and have, in accelerating ways, for a generation and more. Without legions of believers, Black Friday never would have gotten this bold. Despite a surge of resistance as the sales drew near, with scolding editorials and protests by retail employees and reminders of frantic tramplings past, Black Friday's grip on America may have been proven stronger than ever this year.

"It's all part of the holiday ? part of the tradition," said Dennis River, a truck driver who was in line for a television at the Walmart in Beaver Falls, a small community outside of Pittsburgh. Last year, he went out alone at midnight Thursday. This year, he brought his wife and daughter. They were in place by 7 p.m.

"You get up in the morning, cook, do your dinner and your football, then you go shopping," River said. "It's the new thing now. Everyone's afraid of change."

"If they wanna have sales today," he said, "I'm gonna go shopping today."

Walmart's cavernous store is always open, but the deals began at 8 p.m. As with most big retail stores, a police car was parked near the Beaver Falls store entrance. A uniformed officer was at the door, near a stand holding maps to "featured products" such as bikes, cookware, sheets, video game consoles, and eight different TVs.

The witching hour approached. Yellow CAUTION tape cordoned off the bargains and funneled a few thousand supplicants through aisles of ignored items ? yarn, shower curtains, party hats, clocks. Balloons printed with dollar signs followed by low numbers floated above the treasures.

As the cell phones struck eight, a din arose. Excited voices mixed with the sound of boxes dropping into metal shopping carts. The balloons danced as people dug into stacks of leather ottomans ($29) and 5-by-5 foot bins of $5 DVDs.

The temperature climbed. An old man inched through the throng using a folding chair ($11.88) as a crutch. Traffic jammed. Complaints and a few curses echoed.

"I'm not an angry person, but I was angry for the 20 minutes I was in there," Danyel Coyne, a college student, said as she loaded a child booster seat ($12.98) into her trunk.

She and her boyfriend, Mike Yanke, had not come to shop. They needed a spare car seat to take Yanke's daughter back to Pittsburgh. Yet Yanke still had bought a red, battery-powered convertible ($129) at his dad's request.

"I wouldn't say Black Friday has taken over," said Dave Davies, a music producer who was part of the national parade of TVs (his was 50 inches and $399). "Shopping IS the holiday. That's all people care about ? what are you gonna get?"

For some, the items themselves can even take a back seat to the simple act of shopping.

Childhood friends Jesse Bredholt, Ryan Seech and a few other buddies have camped out at Best Buy for four years straight. This year, they arrived a full week early, with a tent, sleeping bags, deodorizing mist sprayer, propane heater and battery power for their gadgets.

They had no idea what they would buy. That was not the point.

For this group of single men in their early 20s, part of a generation who mark the passage of time by their first cell phones and video games, the point is spending time with each other at the source of the products that have always defined their lives.

"Our family is here," said Bredholt, who works for a health-care company. "With five guys on one mattress, you gotta be family."

Karen Jefferson, 49, also has found family on line at Best Buy, beyond her husband and three children. She was there Wednesday, seated on a folding chair, clutching a rolled-up circular.

"I'm missing Thanksgiving, and my husband thinks I'm crazy," said Jefferson, who works at a mortgage insurance company. "But I do this every year . because I enjoy meeting people and the people that come when I do. I mean, you see the same people year after year. And I do get some very good deals."

What about studies that have shown better deals are available at other times of the year?

"Oh, really?" Jefferson said. "You just think, Black Friday! Oh, my gosh, that's the deal of the year."

"Maybe that's something I need to look into," she continued. "Because, I mean, if these aren't good deals, then what are we DOING then?"

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency ...

By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

  1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
  2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
  3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
  4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
  5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
  6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
  7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
  8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

Examples:

  • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
  • Military Chest with handles
  • Military Aid Station chest containers
  • Military hard plastic or metal containers
  • Nylon, Leather or Canvas Back Packs
  • Luggage with wheels and handle
  • Purse or designer bag
  • Lunch box
  • Square or rectangle storage containers
  • Tupperware containers
  • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
  • Hunting vests
  • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.
