How To Reconnect With Your Distant Teenager

The teen years are a challenging time for most families and many may wonder what happened to their sweet and innocent child. Your child is at the brink of adulthood and going through a variety of hormonal changes both mentally and physically. In addition to hormones, they may be also experiencing stress, peer pressure and depression that could affect their emotions. The following tips will discuss how to help you reconnect with your distant teenager.

1) Develop Interests

In order to connect with your teen, you may want to find the areas that are of interest to them. Things such as sports, movies, games, music, and the Internet may hold their attention. This is a great opportunity to develop a shared interest and bond. Also, this is a great way to spend some time with your kid doing what they love, and a parent sharing in that is a sure expression of love, concern, and interest in your teen.

2) Gift Jewelry

You can express your love for your teen in numerous ways both with affection and through a special gift. Showing your love and devotion can be made simple with a hug, kiss and words of encouragement. You can also get a special token to show how much you love and care for them. Gifts of jewelry such as a watch, necklace, bracelet and ring can be a special memento. Engrave the gift with an inscription such as the date or meaningful words of appreciation. This gift does not need to be expensive, only thoughtful. By shopping online, a parent can find great buys for nice jewelry. There are a wide variety of styles of inexpensive diamond rings, watches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets to choose from.

3) Communicate

Many times a relationship between a teen and parent can stall because both parties forget to listen. Communication is imperative in any relationship, especially as a bridge to reconnect with your teen. You may not always see eye-to-eye, but you can still be open to their ideas, thoughts and concerns. You can also make yourself open to listening during times of trouble. When they have a problem, having someone who won?t judge them can be comforting, and you?ll win their trust. It also helps to choose your battles wisely, and getting angry over a particular clothing fad or musical choice may be a waste of time and energy.

4) Make Time

Setting aside time each day can help you and your teen reconnect and develop a meaningful relationship. Whether you have dinner together, spend time chatting on the way to and from school, have breakfast in the morning, or watch a favorite T.V. show in the evening, you can re-establish a relationship by spending quality time together with your teen. Discover a special place that the two of you both enjoy being and relaxing, like a park, to just sit and talk with each other on a weekly basis. Set a special time of a specific day and make it a routine place for the two of you to go to and just talk. There is no greater expression of love than to give your time and full attention to a loved one on a regular basis.

5) Vacation

Sometimes, getting away from everyday worries and concerns can help relieve tension. Taking a trip with your teen on vacation can help solidify your relationship. You can begin by asking your teen if they have any favorite places that they?ve always wanted to go such as Disneyland, camping, beach vacation or a fishing trip. Try to schedule activities that are fun, adventurous and help build a better bonding relationship together. You can also put away the cellphones, laptops and other electronic gadgets, so you?ll have uninterrupted time together. Make a plan far in advance so as the time draws near for the vacation, you both can share in the excitement and anticipation together about the upcoming trip.

A parent and teen relationship can be difficult to manage, especially as they go through a series of emotions as they grow. Finding ways to reconnect can be easy when you implement respect, communication and finding ways to show how important they are in your life. With the above steps as a guide to aide in helping to reconnect, a parent and teen relationship is sure to grow in a more positive direction.

Lisa Coleman writes to express the importance of parents reconnecting with their children and to encourage parents to reach out in special ways to do so with their teenagers. Shopping at an online jewelry store for special gifts, like inexpensive diamond rings for girls or watches for boys, and parental time spent with their teens, are both great ways for parents to express their love and affections for them.
