Dominic Monaghan had some heated words for his former "Lost" co-star Matthew Fox on Twitter over the weekend. It all stemmed from a fan asking Monaghan to persuade Fox to tweet more.

"He beats women. No thanks," he told the fan, @omggbeccaa.

Monaghan was seemingly referring to an allegation by a female Cleveland party-bus driver who filed a personal-injury suit against Fox last year after he allegedly punched her in the groin when she refused to take him back to his hotel. Prosecutors never filed charges against the actor, and Fox has since countersued the woman for defamation.

After Monaghan's initial tweet to her, the fan responded, "I KNOW IT WAS WRONG BUT WHAT?! WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE GOOD TIMES YOU HAD TOGETHER?!"

He tweeted back, "How do you know we ever did?you don't know either of us.he beats women.not isolated incidents.often.not interested."

Regarding the Cleveland woman's claim against Fox, the actor added, "An accusation is when you'claim' someone did something wrong.i know.but hey little fan girl maybe want to get slapped around by him? Daddy issues? Blinded by the nice haircut? It's never okay. Maybe you have lower standards."

As the heated conversation came to an end, the fan responded, "Sorry about the matthew fox thing stay awesome," before she began receiving threats from people who accused her of condoning abuse. "To clear things up- when i wrote that tweet i had no idea it would get that kind of a response from dom.. after that tweet, i wrote back without even thinking- in that moment i was just diassapointed- so for those of you who are saying that i think it is okay to 'beat women' you are wrong, so please stop with the hate tweets," she wrote. "i respect doms opinion, just not the way he handled the response."

According to TMZ, since the exchange went down over the weekend, a source close to Fox said he has never beaten a woman, despite Monaghan's Twitter allegations. The source added that the actors haven't spoken in years and never had any huge arguments that would lead to Monaghan's Twitter tirade. Fox's rep has yet to comment.

In 2010, Monaghan portrayed an abusive boyfriend in Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" video alongside Megan Fox.

"I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did," Monaghan told MTV News in 2011 about his role in the controversial clip.

Of Em's own history with violence, Monaghan added, "He has a very good handle on his anger. He's able to channel it very easily. Instead of hiding behind it or pretending that there's something else going on, he actually is able to pinpoint where his anger is coming from."

Cellular computers? Scientists train cells to perform boolean functions

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins scientists have engineered cells that behave like AND and OR Boolean logic gates, producing an output based on one or more unique inputs. This feat, published in the May issue of Nature Chemical Biology, could eventually help researchers create computers that use cells as tiny circuits.

Study leader Takanari Inoue, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and member of the Institute of Basic Biomedical Sciences' Center for Cell Dynamics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explains that many researchers are striving to mimic devices in everyday use by engineering new qualities into biological materials, including biomolecules and cells. Several of those engaged in this relatively new field, known as synthetic biology, have tried to create biological computers.

At the heart of both the biological and the more everyday silicon-based variety of computers are Boolean logic gates, which produce responses that vary depending on what type and how many inputs they receive. For example, AND gates need two unique inputs to generate an output. In contrast, OR gates generate an output based on whether they receive one input, or another, or both.

Inoue says that previous research has shown some success in generating logic gates based on biomolecules in test tubes or petri dishes. However, he adds, developing logic gates using whole cells has proven significantly trickier. Most previous efforts have taken advantage of cells' transcriptional machinery -- the cellular processes that read genes to create proteins -- to generate an output signal. But transcription can be a slow process, taking from minutes to days to produce the desired response.

"People like to have speedy computation," Inoue says. "We were hoping to achieve computation in cells on the order of seconds, which is significantly faster than what people have achieved thus far."

To accomplish their goal, the researchers used a technique called chemically inducible dimerization, or CID. This tool takes advantage of natural biological mechanisms that bring together two proteins into a complex in the presence of a chemical.

Since AND and OR gates generate a response based on two different inputs, either together or separately, the researchers needed two different CID systems that didn't compete or overlap with each other. They relied on one system that's been studied for years, which brings two proteins, called FRB and FKBP, together in the presence of a drug called rapamycin. Rapamycin comes from bacteria, and FRB and FKBP come from animals.

In addition, they used a second CID system that brings together two other proteins, known as GID1 and GAI, in the presence of a plant hormone called gibberellin. Since this system is native to plants, the gibberellin-based system doesn't compete with the rapamycin-based one, Inoue explains.

The researchers engineered mammalian cells that produce all four of the requisite proteins, as well as a response when the right two proteins came together. When either FRB and FKBP or GID1 and GAI linked up, the cell's membrane developed ruffles easily visible under a microscope.

To create the OR gate, FRB and GAI were bound together at the cell membrane, while FKBP and GID1 were bound together floating freely in the cell. Adding either rapamycin, gibberellin, or both to cells brought the freely floating complex to the one at the cellular membrane, linking up the matching proteins and triggering the output signal.

To create the AND gate, the researchers placed just GAI at the cell membrane, with just FRB and complexes of FKBP and GID1 free-floating in the cell. This system required all four proteins to link up to produce membrane ruffling, which wouldn't occur without both input chemicals.

Tests showed that each of the engineered cellular logic gates produced the desired response reliably, in a matter of seconds. Additionally, as a second proof of principle, the researchers generated similar logic gates that used fluorescence as an output, which worked just as well and quickly.

Eventually, Inoue notes, researchers might use similar cellular logic gates to build larger, more complex circuits that could form the basis for computers that use cells as basic units. In the meantime, these individual cellular circuits could be engineered to produce specific outputs in the presence of chemicals, making them useful detectors or diagnostic agents. He adds that researchers might also use synthetic logic gate systems like this one to study how cells naturally produce outputs to keep bodily functions running smoothly.

Group hierarchy may actually lead to more efficiency and productivity

Despite our inclination to believe equality within a team or group is important, new research suggests that a built-in hierarchy leads to fewer group conflicts and higher productivity.

The research finds a team or group with all high-performers will not outperform teams or groups with an established hierarchy. Teams in which everyone has high power are likely to experience elevated levels of conflict, reduced role differentiations, less coordination and integration, and poorer productivity than teams with a broader distribution of power and status.

The new study, published online in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, was conducted by Adam Galinsky of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University; Richard Ronay of Columbia University; Katharine Greenaway of University of Queensland; and Eric M. Anicich of Columbia University.

The study confirmed the researchers' theory that "there will be greater conflict with all high-power individuals as each member jostles to take control," thus undermining group performance.

"We found that a clear hierarchy, division of labor and patterns of deference reduce conflict, facilitate coordination and ultimately improve group productivity," said Galinsky, Morris and Alice Kaplan Professor of Ethics and Decision in Management at the Kellogg School. "On the other hand, when there are too many leaders or too few followers, group performance suffers."

The research illustrates how the composition of a group ? from sports teams to corporate work teams to political groups ? affects the way the group functions. When a group requires lots of coordination, such as when performing tasks that call for interdependence among the group members, hierarchy wins out. This is the first study that manipulated overall levels of hierarchal differences in groups and measured the effects on group productivity.

"Despite the overt appeal of egalitarian social structures, there remains an enduring implicit preference for hierarchy," Ronay said. The study suggests that this preference has its roots in "the utilitarian value of distributed power."

The authors found similar findings among animals, as well. Previous studies discovered egg production among chickens declined when all the high-producers were placed together. Citing this example, the authors note that "pecking orders, it seems, are not just for the birds."

Two Experiments

In the first experiment, 138 undergraduate students were randomly assigned one of three experimental conditions (high-power, low-power, baseline) and organized into same-sex teams of three high-powered participants, three low-power participants or teams with one high-power, one low-power and one baseline.

Next, the researchers had the teams perform a task that required group interdependence. In this task, each member was required to make words from 16 letters and then work as a group to combine the words into as many sentences as possible. They also measured how the groups functioned on a second task that did not require individuals to coordinate their efforts.

The experiment showed that groups with hierarchies were more productive than groups with either all high-power or all low-power individuals. It also showed that hierarchy is most beneficial when group members are working on a task together, providing no advantage to individuals when working alone.

In the second experiment, Galinsky and his co-authors examined the biological basis of hierarchal differentiation to determine whether individual differences play a role in the formation of naturally occurring hierarchies. The researchers sought to test whether limiting variance in testosterone, a hormone associated with the pursuit of dominance and status, would disrupt development of a hierarchy and reduce group productivity. To measure individual differences in prenatal testosterone exposure, they calculated the ratio between the length of the index finger and the ring finger, with lower ratios indicating higher levels of testosterone during prenatal development. Next, they created groups of high-testosterone, low-testosterone or a mix of both and average testosterone. The participants took part in the same word-and-sentence game which is a procedurally interdependent task as described in the first experiment while the researchers measured the conflict within the groups.

They found that the mixed testosterone groups outperformed the all high and the all low-testosterone groups, conceptually replicating the first study. Furthermore, decrements in performance by the all high-testosterone groups were driven by increased conflict.

The experiments tested for the first time the central prediction of the functional theories of hierarchy: "When power is distributed, intragroup conflicts decrease while coordination and productivity increase," the researchers note. Both sets of experiments supported that conclusion.

These findings are consistent with an earlier study co-authored by Galinsky that revealed hierarchal pay structures on National Basketball Association teams increased performance, promoted coordination and enhance cooperation on teams.

Private profit for public good? Can investing in private companies ...

Donor governments and multilateral institutions have provided grants and loans to private companies operating in developing countries for decades. However, since the 1990s the scale of this support has increased dramatically. In 2010 external investments to the private sector by IFIs exceeded $40 billion. By 2015, the amount flowing to the private sector is expected to exceed $100 billion ? making up almost one third of external public finance to developing countries. As global ODA stagnates, several aid agencies have suggested a dramatic scaling up of public finance devoted to supporting private sector investments.

Using ODA for private sector investment is contentious among civil society organisations. Public development finance can play crucial roles. However, it is fundamental that public finance is channelled to the companies and sectors that have least access to private capital markets, hence ensuring that scarce public resources are genuinely additional to private finance. They must also be channelled to firms and sectors that can deliver the best outcomes for the poor, thus ensuring that public development monies are used for intended purposes.

This report assesses whether external (non-domestic) public finance for private investments in the South lives up to promises to provide finance to credit-constrained companies in developing countries and to deliver positive development outcomes. More precisely, it looks into how much development finance goes to the private sector, as opposed to the public sector; which institutions deliver this type of finance and how; which types of companies are benefiting the most from public support; and how development institutions ensure they support responsible investments that contribute to equitable and sustainable development.

For this purpose, Eurodad assessed recent grant and loan trends, and the portfolios of some of the largest multilateral and bilateral development agencies providing public support to private investments in developing countries. Eurodad?s sample included the World Bank International Finance Corporation (IFC), external lending of the European Investment Bank (EIB) through its African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP) investment facility and Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund, and six bilateral DFIs from Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.

Facebook Has Lost About $35 Billion In Value Since IPO As Shares Dip Below $29

Screen Shot 2012-05-29 at 12.51.12 PMPain, pain, and more pain for Facebook's stock. Facebook sunk into the $20s for the first time today, declining about 9 percent as options trading started. The decline also came a day after a third wave of reports came out about a Facebook phone, which would push the company into the risky and expensive world of building hardware. Shares hit a new low of $28.65 and are now trading at $28.84. That gives the company a market capitalization of $79.02 billion, down from $115 billion market cap Facebook opened at on the day of its IPO when it started trading at $42.05 a share.** (That said, if you're a glass-is-half-full kind of person, Facebook is now cheap, cheap, cheap!)

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.

New Mexico Wildfire Burns More Than 130 Square Miles

?

A wildfire?near New Mexico?s Gila Wilderness, has now grown to 85,000 acres (more than 130 square mile) and caused weekend air-quality warnings as far as Albuquerque And Santa Fe.

The Huffington Post reports that over 500 firefighters are battling the blaze, which is the result of two lightning-sparked fires merging earlier this week. Fire officials are reporting that the fire?s growth is due to relentless winds in recent days.

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire?s acreage was not updated on Saturday, but Fire Information Officer Dan Ware stated, according to Reuters, that:

?We know that there was significant growth yesterday but we don?t have a hard and fast number.?

Ware went on to state:

?This is the biggest show in the country right now in terms of fire size. So a lot of resources are available to us. We?re just not sure we?ll be able to do a lot of flying.?

The Huffington Post reports that the wildfire has already destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and is now threatening the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon, which was placed under a voluntary evacuation order. Strong winds in the area have blown ash almost 35 to 40 miles away, and smoke has spread across the state.

Reuters?reports that the fire?s outlook is not promising for Saturday either. Ware stated Saturday that:

?Fire activity was so extreme yesterday we had to pull crews out. We?re expecting another day like that today. With such high wind levels and low humidity there?s going to be big potential for some major growth.?

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire is currently 0% contained, but fire officials hope to start battling it on Sunday. The fire?s location in rugged terrain, as well as rampant winds, have so far prevented firefighters from attempting to contain it.

Helpful Tips in Dealing with the Most Common Door Problems

Doors are one of the most highly used parts of the house. People come and go through them, and often, we use them with little regard for their integrity; for instance, an upset owner will tend to slam his door. Front doors probably get the most amount of beating, not only from the owner but from the elements as well such as rain, heat and snow; so it's no surprise then to find them malfunctioning.

One of doors' most common problems is loose hinges. Hinges function by keeping your doors latched firmly in place. A major cause of door hinge problems are kids playing monkey by hanging themselves on the door; the hinges are designed to carry the weight of the door only, so their added weight could loosen or even unhinge the door.

Another common problem is sagging doors; they are characterized by having wide gaps from their frames. Sagging doors are caused by hinges that may have been pulled out of the door edge or frame, or when the hinge screws have been loosened due to excess strain. This can be easily fixed by re-securing the hinges with longer or thicker screws.

Sagging doors can also occur because of uneven floor surface. As the door swings, it comes in contact with high spots on the floor, thus slowing or even stopping the door's movement altogether. Since it is difficult to correct the flooring's surface, adjusting the part of the door that comes in contact with the floor would be more practical.

Sticking doors happen when too much paint has been applied to the door or frame. Excessive paint adds thickness to the door's surface, eventually leaving too little gap between the door and the frame. External doors, especially those made of wood, are bound to swell during rainy or winter season as they absorb moisture. That is why when it comes to replacing doors Lexington KY residents make sure their contractors are experts in these problems.

Sometimes the hinge side of the door will come in contact with the frame before the door has fully closed. This could mean that the hinges have sunk too far back into the door or frame. This is a common problem on doors Louisville KY residents have to deal with, and a good solution is to pack out the hinges from their recesses.

If your efforts to repair them prove unsuccessful, then it's about time you seek a professional in door replacement. So if your doors are facing any of these problems, the doors Louisville KY residents choose as replacement could provide you with some helpful pointers. WHY BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE ? Important Facts on Travel ...

It used to be that travel insurance was something not a lot of us think about. If we need to go somewhere, especially for a short vacation or holiday, we don?t bother with the expense of travel insurance for various reasons.

Firstly, nobody likes to think that something bad? is ever going to happen that would require us to have insurance. Secondly, we just don?t want to cough up the extra money for it when it can be used for? other ?more important? things

Why buy travel insurance?? Here are some important facts on travel insurance and the good they can do you.

?For years, it was the great unmentionable in the travel transaction: insurance. Travel agents were afraid to bring up the subject of travel insurance for fear of losing the overall deal. It was considered a negative.

Not anymore. Whether it?s your trip, your possessions, your luggage, or your health, travel insurance ? and most important, the right kind of travel insurance ? has become an essential item to pack for smart travelers. And if you don?t buy travel insurance ? or the right kind ? more than your trip could be ruined.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, about 30 percent of Americans purchase travel insurance, an increase from 10 percent before 9/11. The top three reasons are: peace of mind, protection against the unexpected and concern over losing the financial investment in a trip. Some 70 percent of cruisers buy travel insurance.

While a majority of those who don?t buy travel insurance are familiar with flight and trip cancellation insurance, many people are unaware of travel health insurance, baggage coverage and medical evacuation insurance. Even among travel insurance buyers, only 50 percent were aware of medical evacuation insurance.

?There?s yet another kind of insurance that?s available to air travelers that the airlines aren?t exactly rushing to tell you about. In fact, they actually wish you didn?t know about it. It?s called excess valuation.

Reasons to buy travel insurance?
1. Your flight has been cancelled.
2. Your bags are lost and your medication is in it. You need to have an emergency prescription filled.
3. Your passport and wallet are stolen, and you need emergency cash and a replacement passport.
4. You?re involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. You need medical evacuation.
5. You need to cancel your trip due to illness.
6. Your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt. You need your non-refundable expenses covered and to get to your destination.
7. You have a medical emergency in a foreign country.
8. A terrorist incident occurs in the city where you?re planning to visit and you want to cancel your trip.
9. A hurricane forces you to evacuate your resort, hotel or cruise.

Here are the basics types of insurance:

Flight insurance
Many of us grew up noticing those insurance kiosks at airports. They offer to pay out big bucks if you bought the insurance, the plane crashed and you were on it. Advice: This is not necessary. In fact, if you annualized the premium, it?s the most expensive kind of travel insurance you can buy, and probably the least necessary. My advice: NO.?

Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance
This is a biggie. The key here is price point. If you?re flying on a $59 Southwest Airlines ticket from Burbank to Las Vegas, you have an incredibly small investment to protect. You shouldn?t buy trip cancellation and interruption insurance. A $15,000 once-in-a-lifetime cruise vacation? My advice: YES. Buy this insurance. If you get sick, or miss your trip, or the travel provider (airline, cruise line, bus transfer company) goes out of business, you?re not left high and dry. You?re covered. My advice: YES, with one additional caution. Do NOT buy this insurance from
?the individual travel provider, meaning don?t buy your cruise?trip?insurance from the cruise ship company. Why? If that company goes out of business, chances are, so does their insurance.

Health Care insurance
This is perhaps the most confusing area. Most people think they are covered if they already have existing health care insurance. Within the United States, that?s true. Outside the U.S., however, is a big IF. And in some cases, your insurance won?t even cover you if you?re traveling on a foreign-flagged vessel. This is a huge red flag, since most cruise ships, even those cruising U.S. waters, are not flagged in the U.S.

And in many cases, even if you are covered for basic emergency care overseas (again, a big IF), in almost all cases, your current health insurance does NOT cover you to evacuate you and repatriate you back to the U.S.? This is where ?Medical Evacuation and Repatriation? insurance comes into play. I believe this is essential for anyone who travels. It?s an insurance program (usually an annual premium, not often purchased per trip) where if you get sick or injured overseas the policy will get you treated, stabilized and flown back to the U.S. There are a number of good companies that provide this plan, two of which are Travel Guard and Medjet Assist. The annual premium is about $300, and it?s the card you hope you never have to use. My Advice: YES, get this, with another important caveat: read the fine print. With Travel Guard and Medjet assist, these policies provide that they will get you initially treated and stabilized and then send a medically equipped and staffed jet to fly you to the doctor and medical facility of your choice. This is crucial. Outside of Travel Guard and Medjet assist, many other companies that offer this insurance will fly you to the doctor and medical facility of their choice.

And then there?s another reason for getting this coverage: If you?re in a foreign country, particularly a developing country, many hospitals will admit you without caring about coverage, but they won?t let you leave until you pay. Travel insurance can help facilitate payment, and act as an advocate so that you?re not overcharged because you?re an American.

Baggage insurance
Many?trip cancellation and interruption policies also provide coverage for lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags? And this is especially necessary if you?re flying overseas and checking bags. Why? Because of a nasty little thing called the Warsaw Convention.. The old Warsaw Convention limits liability to approximately $9.07 per pound for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage. Do the math. If you?re only allowed 44 pounds of baggage as a coach passenger, you?re not getting a fat check.

But if you?re just flying between U.S. cities and think you have no need for a larger trip cancellation and interruption policy, you may think you are simply covered by the airlines? published limits of liability when it comes to lost, stolen, delayed or damaged bags.

Indeed, at least on the surface, it seems like you?re covered. As of Feb. 28, 2007, U.S. airlines? liability for lost or damaged luggage increased to $3,000 per passenger from the current limit of $2,800. Sounds good, right? Well, let?s talk about that limit in realistic terms: First, there?s an entire list of excluded items not covered (jewels, furs, negotiable financial documents, et al), and then there?s something called?.depreciation. The airlines may have a $3,000 liability limit, but that limit is not per bag, it?s per incident, and it?s all based on depreciated value. Hardly anyone in the history of aviation has ever received $3,000.

But there?s a little known insurance provision you?ve probably never heard about. And the airlines aren?t exactly rushing to tell you about it. In fact, not one single airline even advertises this provision, even though it?s available to every single passenger. It?s something called ?excess valuation.?

When you get to the airport, ask the counter agent for this little known option called?excess valuation.? It provides up to $5,000 additional coverage, at a rate of about $1 per $100 in value. If you purchase excess valuation, you will be asked to describe the contents of the bag. It?s well worth it if the airline does lose your bags.

Non-refundable insurance
Some policies also offer straight coverage if you buy the non-refundable airline ticket and then can?t use it and don?t want to be hit with the minimum $100 change fee. This runs about $13 per $100 of coverage. An expensive premium, but still worth it if you really think you might have to change your trip once you purchase your ticket.

Golf travel insurance
Travel Guard provides golf equipment loss, golf equipment delay, golf fee refund. In addition, every Golf Travel Insurance Plan customer will also receive AIG Travel Guard?s Golf Concierge Services, which includes golf course recommendations and driving directions, tee time reservations, PGA-Professional referral service and much. If get a hole-in-one, we?ll reimburse for the celebratory round of drinks (up to $250) at the clubhouse.

?Adventure/extreme sports travel
In most cases, there are exclusions on basic travel insurance when it comes to adventure travel. That means specifications on how high is the mountain you?re climbing, and how far are you scuba diving. However, third-party travel insurance can offer additional coverage for adventure and extreme sports?even professional sporting events can be covered, but it will cost you.

Credit card coverage
If you book your trip on a credit card, you may already be covered in many cases. But more often than not, your basic credit card coverage will be limited to flight accident insurance, rental car insurance or limited baggage insurance.? Be sure to read your card?s terms and conditions, or call your credit card provider?s toll-free line for guidance.

Terrorism tips
Read the policy wording carefully. If war breaks out, or there is a terrorist act, are there clauses that essentially void your policy? Very few policies cover trip cancellation for reasons of any kind. Most policies now include ?force majeure? clauses. For example, most policies now still cover trip cancellation if the U.S. State Department issues a travel warning. Also many policies only cover you for your trip if an act of terrorism occurs in the specific country you?re traveling to or from. And they set limits on how close an attack?has to be to your destination before it goes into effect. You generally must buy the policy?before violence erupts to be covered. But almost all policies will not cover any losses caused by war or threat of war.

Call and talk to the agency personally, ask them the specific questions you have before your trip, to put your mind at ease. Some insurance plans cover you only if a travel company formally files for bankruptcy protection. (Not every policy covers every bankruptcy.) Other policies leave it up to the U.S. State Department, law enforcement agencies or news media outlets ? not you ? to define what constitutes a terrorist attack, foreign or domestic.

Understand that most insurance policies won?t cover last-minute anxiety. After the Sept. 11 attacks, for example, Travel Guard reimbursed customers who canceled trips because they were afraid to fly. While Travel Guard felt it was the right thing to do, it?s unlikely the insurer will do it again. It was the costliest event in the history of that company.

So now that you know all the types of? travel insurance available and the reasons why travel insurance may be necessary , the question is ,?TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY?

To buy, or not to buy?
Compare the cost of the trip versus the cost of the policy. If you just bought a $200 airline ticket, is that worth covering? If you paid for it with a credit card, and the airline ceases to operate before your flight, you?re already covered ? under federal credit laws ? by your own credit card company, since you bought or contracted for a service which you didn?t get.

Look for a policy with a travel insurer that is independent from your tour operator and is licensed by your state. Many cruise lines and tour operators offer insurance, often at lower premiums than those charged by outside insurers. But if the cruise line or tour company goes out of business, there may not be money to cover your claim.

If flight or cruise delays make you want to cancel, you may be out of luck. Read the fine print, as with some policies, more than half of your vacation has to be delayed before you can cancel and be covered.
The source of this article is?http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/17519580/ns/today-travel/t/do-you-need-travel-insurance/.

?The aim of the game is to do as much as you can to keep yourself safe. Having your medical bills paid is little consolation if you are stuck in a foreign hospital or have to cut your trip short.?

Here are some general rules:

1. Pretend for a moment that you don?t have any travel insurance.
How would you behave? Act as though you are uninsured! This mind-set is a good way not to ever have use of our excellent services.

Keep your belongings safe, and if they really mean a lot to you, don?t ever let them get out of reach.

2. Accidents happen: stupidity doesn?t?
Say, you meet a ?friend?, agree to engage in sexual activity and as a result wake up in the morning with no bag, passport and a headache, are you covered? It depends. MAYBE, you are covered for unprovoked assault by a third party, and you would probably be covered for replacement of your personal belongings, but NO, we wouldn?t cover you if the ?liaison? was illegal under local sex-tourism laws.

3. Is it safe to go there??
While we cover travel for most countries of the world, unfortunately the small print of travel insurance inevitably contains exclusions. The major one is if you go somewhere and you know it?s not safe or your government?s travel advisory advises you shouldn?t go there. Bottom line: if you put yourself at risk or you place yourself in the crossfire, then you are unlikely to be covered.

4. Feeling adventurous and being adventurous are two different things
The?adventure sports and activities?we cover depends on your country of permanent residence and your particular level of insanity (and more importantly, skill).

If you are wildlife-watching in the extremes of Alaska and are attacked by a polar bear, are you covered? It depends. You see, if the bear attacks you while you were watching them as a part of a wildlife safari or trekking, then YES we would cover you (assuming the bear didn?t catch you of course), but if you were chasing the bear having had a beer too many the night before and you thought it would be a laugh? err? then NO, we wouldn?t.

If you are skiing and you?re caught in an avalanche, are you covered? It depends. For example, if you leap out of a hovering helicopter while trying to pretend that you?re in a Hollywood action movie, then NO, you aren?t covered.

Got the message? If you are unsure about anything, ask us and we?d rather clear up a grey area before you have a claim.

A good rule of thumb is to remember that insurance is there for things that might go wrong and will not cover extreme risks such as:

  1. 1.???????Medical conditions that exist before you travel
You can still take out the insurance for other benefits but you should be aware that costs of treatments that you knew were likely or possible before you travel won?t be covered.
  2. 2.??????Deliberately put your life in danger
Trekking across the arctic in a t-shirt is not conducive to picking up your pension
  3. 3.??????Involve alcohol or drugs
Apart from the risks that you take while off your face in a place that you aren?t familiar with, you probably won?t get your claim paid.
  4. 4.??????HIV or STD?s
We know this is a little weird but if you contract STD?s or HIV while you are away, these aren?t covered. We are working with our insurance partners to review these exclusions.

Policy Exclusions

All travel insurance policies have specific exclusions so it?s common-sense to take the time to read the policy wording carefully.

Policy wording varies depending on?which country?you are from.

You now have a pretty good idea of what travel insurance is, what it can mean to you when you are travelling, what it covers and what it doesn?t.? Ray Martin, Special Contributor, CBS Moneywatch.com talks in this video about why we would need travel insurance.

With all these facts before you, choosing the right travel insurance to get should be pretty easier than before.? Remember, the golden rule here is, be safe always.
