7 anti-blockbusters you must see this summer

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - It's not all masked vigilantes and Bourne-again spies filling the screens the rest of summer.

Between film festival hits, new controversy from Spike Lee and a devastating documentary about the military, there's plenty coming to the multiplex to keep you out of the heat.

Here are seven not to miss, in order of release date. More good news: two open on Friday.

TO ROME WITH LOVE (June 22)

Hot off his "Midnight in Paris" success - which won an Oscar and became the highest-grossing film of his career - Woody Allen returns with another European venture.

This one follows an assortment of quirky characters and their experiences with love, sex and marriage in the great, ancient city of Rome. It also marks Allen's first onscreen appearance since 2006's "Scoop," playing the father of a bride-to-be who becomes an unexpected opera impresario.

Joining him in the cast: Alec Baldwin, Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz and - somehow we knew this was eventually bound to happen in an Allen film - Jesse Eisenberg.

THE INVISIBLE WAR (June 22)

In the documentary "The Invisible War," director Kirby Dick tackles the harrowing rape epidemic in the U.S. military.

It follows the stories of dozens of female victims of sexual assault and the struggles they faced in their pursuit of justice.

Even before its release date, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced that major changes would be made in the investigations of military rapes, and a top general featured in the film who defends the military's reaction to this issue was replaced. Justice has been, and will hopefully continue to be, served.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (June 27)

Director Benh Zeitlin's fantastical, apocalyptic, coming-of-age survival tale follows six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhan? Wallis) on her journey to find her lost mother in the wake of her father's disintegrating health - and a series of environmental changes that unleash mythical beasts called the aurochs.

The film nabbed the Grand Jury Prize and Excellence in Cinematography awards in the U.S. dramatic competition this year at Sundance, as well as the Camera d'Or Prize at Cannes.

These top prizes are all the more impressive as the film - inspired by Hurricane Katrina victims who refused to leave their homes - stars an unknown young actress (Wallis) and was directed by a first-time filmmaker (Zeintlin) under fiercely real and difficult conditions.

TAKE THIS WALTZ (June 29)

Michelle Williams follows her Oscar-nominated turn as Marilyn Monroe with the charming Sarah Polley-directed tale of a woman caught in a love triangle.

Williams plays Margot, who must choose between two sweet, loving men: husband Lou (funnyman Seth Rogen) and mystery man-with-an-edge Daniel (eye candy Luke Kirby).

The choice is made all the more difficult as Lou loves Margot unconditionally but feels both too comfortable and unfulfilled. As a result, she pins everything on her constant desire for Daniel.

In the end, the film has serious things to say about love, sex and relationships.

KILLER JOE (June 29)

Matthew McConaughey stars as a bad-ass hit man in "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" director William Friedkin's upcoming tale of murder, revenge, bloodlust and greed.

The plot revolves around a man (Chris Smith, played by Emile Hirsch) who will be killed if he can't repay a debt. So Smith hires McConaughey's Killer Joe Cooper to finish off his mother in order to collect her life insurance.

Naturally, all hell breaks loose: Killer Joe preys upon Smith's sister Dottie (Juno Temple) and catalyzes the destruction of the family.

This is not a guy to be messed with.

RUBY SPARKS (7/25)

From the creators of the 2006 surprise hit "Little Miss Sunshine" comes an eccentric rom-com about a writer with an incredibly active imagination.

Calvin (the always interesting Paul Dano), a novelist struggling with writer's block, makes a breakthrough with his Zooey Deschanel-esque fictional character, Ruby Sparks (screenwriter Zoe Kazan). Naturally, he falls in love with her; not so naturally, she suddenly appears in the flesh, acting as though they had always been dating.

As the writer in complete control of the situation, Calvin must determine how his great love with Ruby should unravel, and whether it will be a storybook ending.

RED HOOK SUMMER (August 10 in New York, expanding August 24)

Spike Lee returns with another installment of his Chronicles of Brooklyn, which began with his breakout "Do the Right Thing" - a film that gets several nods in this latest work.

An official Sundance selection, "Red Hook" follows Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a middle-class boy from Atlanta who is sent to Brooklyn's Red Hook projects for the summer, to live with his zealous preacher grandfather Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters).

The summer seems to be a failure of epic proportions until Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith) comes along to show Flik that there is an upside to Brooklyn.

But it's not all feel-good coming-of-age sweetness. "Red Hook" sparked a heated debate at Sundance over a sexual act involving Bible scripture. It could end up being Lee's most controversial yet.

'Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World': The Reviews Are In!

Cataclysmic comedy starring Keira Knightley and Steve Carell has critics divided.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Critics are decidedly split on Lorene Scafaria's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" and whether its cataclysmic hijinks are cute or phony.

Here is our roundup of reviews for "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World."

The Story
"At least it's an ambitious misfire from the filmmaker, screenwriter Lorene Scafaria making a rocky directing debut. The movie ponders what people would do with their final days if the end were a fait accompli. Will anarchy reign or will humanity win out? Will Dodge (Carell) and Penny (Knightley), relative strangers living in the same apartment building, find each other, and love, before the planet and the asteroid collide? Or will they die alone? Lots of potential for a really tragic love story — from here to eternity, literally." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Steve Carell
"The sad sack in question is Dodge, a New York insurance salesman played by Steve Carell with the air of melancholy that serves, in his big-screen roles, as the functional equivalent of a 'Don't Call Me Michael Scott' T-shirt. Mr. Carell has a penchant for wounded and wistful romantic roles. Here, as in 'Dan in Real Life' and 'Crazy, Stupid, Love,' he is a nebbishy guy so far out of the Darwinian sexual rat race that he becomes irresistible to women." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Keira Knightley
"Penny feels equally underwritten, which leaves the awkward sight of Knightley, evidently still stuck in 'A Dangerous Method' mode, straining to appear girl-next-door cute while her facial expressions scream 'mental patient.' "— Peter Debruge, Variety

The Director
"Screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (the similarly fey 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist') is over her head in her feature directing debut, unable to establish a consistent tone in a movie that flirts with black comedy, satire, romantic comedy and touchy-feely earnestness without really delivering any of them." — Lou Lumenick, New York Post

The Final Word
"What it doesn't have is a way of making sense of its comic and dramatic strains, together, in the same movie. Carell and Knightley work hard to bring life and truth to each stage of a dawning friendship. By the end, though, Dodge and Penny have had one too many affirming encounters that feel engineered, not lived." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Kickstarter pledges more transparency, publishes project stats page with daily updates

Kickstarter pledges more transparency, publishes project stats page with daily updates

Every time we boot up a browser there appears to be a new iPad mount or Arduino project on Kickstarter, but just how many projects have there been to date? How many were successful? And how much might that microfunding startup be netting in commission cash? You can find all those answers through a new Kickstarter stats page (and some number crunching on a calculator), updated daily with key raw data that's tallied, and broken up by category as well. To date, 60,786 projects have launched, of which 24,986 (44 percent) were successfully funded, 31,722 failed and 4,078 are currently active on the site. Of the $261 million that's come in, $219 million has been in the form of "successful dollars," representing $10.95 million in income for the company itself based on a five-percent commission rate -- roughly the same amount raised for Pebble, a single project. Speaking of million-dollar-plus projects, there have been a total of seven, including one in the Music category, three in Games, two in Design and one in Comics (Pebble falls within the Design category, not Technology). There are plenty more stats to comb through if you've been hankering for a peek behind the scenes at Kickstarter -- it's all at our source link after the break.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 review roundup: a $99 card that fails to keep Kepler's promise

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 review round-up: a $99 card that fails to match Kepler's promise

NVIDIA blew reviewers away with its flagship GTX 680, but building cards for the low-end is a whole different challenge. The GT 640 hits the $99 price point, where it sits right between the AMD Radeon HD 7750 at $109 and the last-gen Radeon 6670 at around $80. As it turns out, these rivals pull off something of a pincer movement, leaving NVIDIA's card little room to retaliate. The GT 640 contains a 28nm Kepler chip, but it's a cutdown version of the silicon with just 384 CUDA cores, a poor memory bandwidth of 28.5GB/s and no GPU Boost feature -- which means the card can't boost its 900MHz to make use of thermal headroom. These limitations have a significant impact on the benchmarks, as you'll see in our little review roundup after the break.

'Breaking Dawn' Trailer: Edward And Bella Go To War

War comes to the Cullen clan in brand-new teaser trailer for 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2.'
By Josh Wigler

Renesmee Cullen is not an immortal child — but that's not stopping the Volturi from coming her way.

The impending clash between the Cullens and the Volturi is very much at the center of the newest "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" teaser trailer, which finally dropped on Tuesday, just in time for Edward Cullen's 111th birthday. But he better blow those candles out quickly, because war is most certainly on the horizon.

All is well, if different, when the "Breaking Dawn" teaser begins. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is a vampire now after the events of the most recent "Twilight" film, opening up new experiences and powers for her to discover. "After 18 years of being utterly ordinary, I finally found I could shine," Bella says in the trailer. "I was born to be a vampire."

"You're so beautiful," Robert Pattinson's Edward tells his newly fanged wife. "We're the same temperature now."

Even Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is pleasantly surprised upon seeing Bella's transformation, admitting: "I didn't expect you to seem so ... you."

But the happy gathering is short-lived as Irina of the Denali Coven approaches the Volturi to report a crime. "The Cullens have done something terrible," she lies, leading them to believe that Edward and Bella's newborn daughter is an immortal child — a form of vampire that the Volturi believe is far too powerful to be left alive.

"Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative," they decide. With one little falsehood, Irina has convinced the Volturi to embark upon the wrongful murder of an innocent child.

"If enough people knew the truth, perhaps we could get the Volturi to listen," suggests Carlisle (Peter Facinelli) in his typically level-headed manner. But reason won't be enough, as he and the others know, leading Bella, Edward, Jacob and the rest to start gathering allies for the coming conflict.

No matter the danger that threatens her daughter's life, however, Bella knows one thing for sure: "I'm never going to let anything hurt you," she tells Renesmee in an all-too-brief sighting of Mackenzie Foy as the fan-favorite character at the trailer's conclusion.

Director Bill Condon's "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" lands in theaters on November 16.

What do you think of the new "Twilight" teaser trailer? Tell us in the comments below!

PDP's Afterglow gaming headset is eye-catching | Ubergizmo

If you?re looking for some gaming accessories for your home console or your home gaming rig, you might want to consider Performance Designed Products? (PDP) Afterglow gaming peripherals. Debuted earlier this month at E3, the Afterglow gaming controllers and headsets are expected to be released this September. As pictured above, the headset has been rather uniquely designed and appears to be giving off some kind of light show which will no doubt prove to be a head turner if you were to bring it out with you on the streets or if it were to be used during LAN parties.

According to Performance Designed Products, the headsets will offer up to 10 hours of usage via a rechargeable lithium polymer battery, a bass boost, proprietary 3D surround sound algorithm and 50mm neodymium speakers. For those who would rather not get a wireless headset, PDP is also offering a wired version which will retail for $49.95, while the wireless one will retail for $89.95. Since we did not actually try these out for ourselves, we can?t really speak for its quality but they admittedly look pretty cool. Head on over to PDP?s website for the details.
