Fujifilm FinePix F750EXR


The Fujifilm FinePix F750EXR ($349.95 direct) is a 16-megapixel point-and-shoot camera?with a long 20x zoom range. Despite packing such an ambitious lens, it's small enough to slide into your pocket, and manages to squeeze in quite a few physical controls. It doesn't have a GPS or Raw shooting support like Fuji's top end model, the F770EXR ($379.95 direct), but produces sharp JPG images nonetheless.? On image quality, it runs neck and neck with our Editors' Choice, the Sony Cyber-shot HX30V ($419.99, 4 stars), but that camera is faster, integrates Wi-Fi, and is more well rounded than the?F750EXR.

Design and Features
The curvy F750EXR looks a lot like the other cameras in its family, including the Fujifilm FinePix F600EXR ($349.95, 3 stars). The body has some interesting lines, including a rounded top plate and an angled Mode dial.? The camera measures 2.4 by 4.1 by 1.4 inches, weighs 8 ounces, and can be had in white, red, or black finishes. This makes it roughly the same size and weight as the Canon PowerShot SX260HS ($349.99, 4 stars)?it is 2.4 by 4 by 1.2 inches and 7.7 ounces.

There are ample physical controls, including a programmable Function button, as well as dedicated controls for EV Compensation, macro focusing, flash control, movie recording, and the self timer. If you need to adjust other settings, you'll need to launch the overlay menu system, which is split into two parts. A short version, launched via the F-Mode button, gives you access to ISO, Image Size, Drive Mode, and Film Simulation effects. To adjust more esoteric items, you'll need to dive into the full version of the on-screen menu, launched via the Menu/OK button. There's also a physical button on the left side of the camera to raise the flash?unlike the F600EXR it is purely mechanical, which works more consistently than the electronic button found on that camera.

The 3-inch rear LCD features a fairly sharp, but-not-outstanding, 460k-dot resolution. It's certainly adequate for image framing and review, but is noticeably lacking in quality when compared with the excellent 921k-dot display found on the Nikon Coolpix S9300 ($349.95, 2.5 stars). The lens has a 20x zoom factor that covers a 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) focal range. It isn't the longest zoom available on a pocket camera?that honor goes to the 21x (23-483mm equivalent) lens on the Samsung WB850F ($379.99, 3.5 stars).

Performance and ConclusionsFujifiilm FinePix F750EXR : Benchmark Tests
The F750EXR starts and shoots in about 2.2 seconds, captures a 6-shot burst of photos at about 3 frames per second, and records a 0.3-second shutter lag. This level of performance is good for a compact superzoom, but not the best we've seen. The Editors' Choice Sony HX30V can start and shoot in only 1.5 seconds, shoots a 10 shot burst of photos at close to 7 frames per second, and delivers nearly unperceivable shutter lag.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of photos captured by the F750EXR. The camera scored 1,877 lines per picture height, which exceeds the 1,800 lines required for a sharp image. It's certainly adequate, but not the sharpest lens we've tested. The Samsung WB850F notched 2,377 lines on the same test.

Imatest also measures the level of noise present in photos. As you increase the sensor's sensitivity to light, measured numerically as ISO, noise increases in kind. When an image has too much noise, over 1.5 percent, it looks grainy and detail suffers. The FX750's only manages to keep noise under control through ISO 400, possibly because it does not apply too much digital noise reduction. Images at ISO 400 are full of detail, and although shots at ISO 800 are a little grainier, they manage to capture a good amount of detail as well. The Nikon Coolpix S9300 scored better on the Imatest noise test?keeping it below 1.5 percent through ISO 1600?but close examination of the images shows that the F750EXR does a much better job capturing detail at ISO 400 and 800.

Video is recorded in QuickTime format at 1080p30 resolution. The footage looks okay, but not great. Colors are good, but details are not as crisp as they are on other point-and-shoots. ?You can zoom in and out while recording, but the sound of the lens moving is audible. There's a mini HDMI port to connect to an HDTV, and a proprietary USB port for computer connectivity. Standard SD, SHDC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.

The Fujifilm FinePix F750EXR is a very good compact superzoom, but there are cameras out there that deliver more features and better image quality. The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS edges the Fuji out in terms of image quality, adds a GPS, and is available for the same price. Our Editors' Choice, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V, is $70 more, but produces top-notch images and adds a GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity. If you like the design of the F750EXR, but need to geotag your photos, the Fuji F770EXR is essentially the same camera, only with the addition of a GPS and Raw shooting support?for $30 more.

Nash persuades Suns to send him to Lakers

PHOENIX (AP) ? Steve Nash wanted to go to the Los Angeles Lakers. He just needed an assist.

The Phoenix Suns would have to reach a sign-and-trade deal to facilitate the move and, according to Nash, they were reluctant.

Eventually, they relented and the two-time MVP point guard is going to the Pacific Division rival he tried so hard to beat, with little success, in his eight seasons with the Suns.

In one of those odd NBA twists, the Lakers' trade of Lamar Odom to Dallas before last season paved the way for Nash's arrival. Los Angeles used the trade exception it got in the Odom deal to make the Nash move work.

The 38-year-old Nash was a free agent, but a sign-and-trade agreement was necessary for the Lakers to afford him. He agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract. In return, the Suns get four draft picks ? first-rounders in 2013 and 2015 and second-rounders in 2013 and 2014.

Nash's agent, Bill Duffy, said the deal was completed Wednesday about 9 p.m., EDT.

In a statement released by Duffy, Nash said that after he and the Suns agreed to part ways, he went back to the team and asked it to pursue a sign-and-trade deal with Los Angeles "because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family," who live in Phoenix.

"They were very apprehensive and didn't want to do it," Nash said. "Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had, and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better."

There had been sign-and-trade talks with New York and a lucrative free agent offer from Toronto.

The deal will put Nash on the floor with the team he tried to unseat as a Western Conference power, teaming him with Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. That could be enough to lift the Lakers back into title contention.

The Suns at least get something for the loss of their longtime leader and one of the city's most popular athletes, although no one to help immediately, unless some or all of the picks are used in future trades.

Nash's Phoenix teammate Jared Dudley tweeted that Nash "has not only been the best but the most unselfish player I ever played with. I only wish him the best. He deserves everything. Steve Nash has made many players millions. Only fitting to trade to a team that has a chance to win the ship and pay what he deserves."

Nash has never made it to the NBA Finals. He was last in the Western Conference finals against the Lakers in 2010, when the Suns lost in six games and Los Angeles went on to win the NBA title.

The Suns drafted Nash in 1998, but traded him to Dallas after two seasons because Phoenix already had Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd at the position. Nash played six seasons for Dallas, but bolted when owner Mark Cuban declined to spend big money to keep him. Then-Suns owner Jerry Colangelo brought a plane load of Phoenix players and officials to Dallas to woo Nash.

Nash thrived in Mike D'Antoni's run-and-gun system, earning MVP honors in 2005, when he averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 assists, and again in 2006, when he averaged a career-high 18.8 points and 10.5 assists. Nash averaged fewer than 10 assists only once, 9.7 in 2008-09, and topped 11 per game five times in his eight years with Phoenix.

Despite his age and the fact his team failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row, Nash was second in the NBA in assists last season at 10.7 and averaged 12.7 points. His 53 percent shooting rate was a career high.

He is one of the most accurate free throw shooters in NBA history at 90.4 percent. His 9,916 assists rank him fifth in NBA history behind all-time leader John Stockton, Kidd, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson.

The Suns resisted trading Nash during his final season and insisted they were interested in bringing him back, but they never seriously were in the discussion. Toronto and New York dominated the talk until the Lakers came on quickly Tuesday.

Nash's arrival should rejuvenate the Lakers, who lost in the second round for the second straight postseason after their back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. The Lakers struggled to move on from departed coach Phil Jackson's triangle offense to new coach Mike Brown's system during the lockout-shortened season, with four-time All-Star forward Gasol particularly failing to fit in while getting pushed to the third option on offense most nights.

Nash's peerless playmaking abilities and veteran presence could smooth over those problems, particularly after a full training camp to define the Lakers' roles in Brown's offense.

The draft picks probably don't mean too much to the Lakers, who have traded away their first-round picks the past three seasons. They haven't drafted a regular starter since 2005.

Nash's deal was part of a busy 24 hours for the Suns, who are looking to get younger and more athletic.

On Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the talks, they agreed to a four-year, $58 million offer with restricted free agent guard Eric Gordon, although the Hornets say they will match it.

After the Nash agreement Wednesday night, according to a source who requested anonymity because deals can't be announced until July 11, the Suns reached a three-year, $18 million deal with free agent forward Michael Beasley. Then, an hour or so before midnight, they reached an agreement to bring back point Goran Dragic in a three-year, $30 million deal that can reach $34 million with incentives. The fourth year is a player option.

Suns fans anticipated Nash's departure. They gave him a roaring standing ovation when he took the court in Phoenix's regular-season finale. They knew he was probably headed somewhere. They doubtless would prefer it was not the hated Lakers.

Judge Who Tossed Out Apple/Motorola Lawsuit ... - Business Insider

The judge who tossed out Apple's major lawsuit against Motorola?the smartphone maker now owned by Google?generally dislikes software patents and how tech companies have been abusing them.

"As in any jungle, the animals will use all the means at their disposal, all their teeth and claws that are permitted by the ecosystem," U.S. Judge Richard Posner told Reuters in an interview. He sits on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.

The case didn't land on his docket by accident either. He volunteered to hear it, he told Reuters.

Posner is a rare judge, not only for granting media interviews but for taking a stance against patents. The judge believes that patents in most industries are doing more harm than good. In some industries, like pharmaceuticals, they make sense since it costs so much to develop drugs.

But with devices, multiple patents can cover each element of a device.

"You just have this proliferation of patents," Posner said in the interview. "It's a problem."

By tossing out the case and canceling the trial, he stopped an injunction against the sale of Motorola phones. He thought stopping the sale of the whole device because of a patent dispute on one tiny element of it wasn't a good deal for consumers.

Too bad other judges don't have Posner's sense. Last week, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California bowed to Apple's wish and barred Samsung Electronics from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Samsung is still allowed to sell its newer device, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 II.

Ideally Congress would fix the laws to make is harder to get software patents. But since that seems unlikely, rulings on individual cases will define if and how tech companies can stop their competitors using patent lawsuits.

(LOS ANGELES ) - As we mark our country?s independence today, we recall the ringing, aspirational words of the Declaration of Independence: ?We hold these truths to be self-evident,? that all people ?are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.?

The long struggle for equality in the United States isn?t over. As we continue to struggle today for equality here, our country?s $30 billion in military assistance and our invaluable diplomatic support for Israeli occupation and apartheid denies Palestinians that same equality, the very principle on which our country was founded.

A few weeks ago, the Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel, a member group of the US Campaign, drew attention to how our taxes bankroll Israel?s inequality toward Palestinians. They erected 23 billboards in the Los Angeles area to tell Congress to end aid to Israel.

Guess what? Almost as soon as the billboards went up, the billboard company?CBS Outdoor?took them down.

Why? Could it have been for the laughable reason that CBS Outdoor provided for breaking the contract, which was that we, along with the Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel, set up a petition to thank them for running these ads? Doubtful.

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the Anti-Defamation League didn?t take a shine to the ads? Or, maybe, it was because Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) complained about them in a press release?

Berman, who seems to have had no more important matter to take care of, such as helping to solve the national economic crisis or ending the war in Afghanistan, was agitated because he ?must drive past? the billboards ?every morning.? And, as Berman noted, he believes that he was elected to Congress by his constituents ?in large part to fight for a stronger U.S.-Israel relationship. This has been, and will continue to be one [of] my top legislative priorities in Congress.?

Really, Rep. Berman? According to our website www.aidtoisrael.org, your constituents are paying nearly $57 million of their hard-earned tax dollars from 2009 to 2018 to bankroll Israel?s illegal military occupation. We?re betting that you didn?t ask the 20 percent of families with children living below the poverty line in your district whether they sent you to Congress to fund the Israeli military?

From now until July 9, which is the seventh anniversary of the Palestinian civil society call for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against Israel and corporations that profit from its oppression of Palestinians, help us collect 10,000 signatures to deliver to Rep. Berman letting him know that you support sanctions against Israel, including ending U.S. military aid.

This is not just another lame internet petition that won?t go anywhere. We deliver our petitions to their intended targets and put effective political pressure on them. Just last week, we organized a delegation to the State Department headed by Sandra Tamari, a Palestinian-American, who was discriminated against both by Israel and the United States when she was recently denied entry at Ben-Gurion airport.

Together with member groups Jewish Voice for Peace, St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee, American Muslims for Palestine, and our friends at the Arab American Institute, we delivered more than 17,000 signatures to the State Department protesting U.S. and Israeli discriminatory policies. We?ve got a creative delivery planned for these petitions to Rep. Berman on July 9, but only if we have enough signatures to really show our strength. Help us reach our goal of 10,000 signatures by signing today, and then forwarding it to all your friends, and sharing it on Facebook and Twitter.
